Professional teeth whitening is a safe, easy, and effective way to lift numerous shades of stains and discoloration from your teeth in about an hour. This painless treatment is famous for its beautiful results, but despite its reputation for effectiveness, you may have heard it can sometimes cause tooth sensitivity. While it is true that this can occur, there are many steps you can take to help lower your risk of this temporary side-effect.

What Causes Sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity following a whitening treatment is typically caused by the whitening agents removing small amounts of minerals from your enamel as they work. When lost, your teeth become more porous, and their dentin can become exposed. Dentin is what enables your teeth to feel sensation, so when it is not protected, you can experience heightened sensitivity to heat and cold. Thankfully, once these minerals are restored, it should subside.

How Do I Stop Sensitivity?

If you are already experiencing tooth sensitivity, try brushing with a sensitive toothpaste for a few weeks. Though it will not work instantly, this should help restore those missing minerals within a few days and put an end to the discomfort as well. You can also continue to brush with your regular paste, and it will go away on its own usually in no more than a week.

How Do I Prevent Sensitivity?

Following your professional whitening treatment, you can lower your risk of experiencing sensitivity by avoiding any food or beverages with an extreme temperature. Stick to room temperature water or at very least skip the ice and avoid frozen treats like ice cream or popsicles. On the other end of the spectrum, wait a few days before having hot beverages or soups, and consider switching to a sensitive toothpaste for a few weeks to help give your teeth a chance to regain their strength.

Furthermore, because professional whitening is much less likely to cause issues than over-the-counter products, avoid using anything you can buy in the pharmacy or discount store.

Remember, getting a whiter, brighter smile doesn’t have to be hard, or painful. Follow these practical tips and you’ll have gleaming teeth without the fear of sensitivity!
